I think it’s funny that Sony finally won a digital format war. They tried so hard with Betamax, and I’ll admit, it was the superior format of the time. Almost no one remembers the SA-CD format that was meant to overcome the standard CD format. However when Blu-ray went up against HD-DVD, Blu-ray won. So you may be wondering why I think this is funny.
Let me start with a little background with video formats. Before Blu-ray Discs there were, and still are, DVDs. Prior to DVDs, VHS was the popular format. The are various reasons that people adopted DVDs over VHS. There was obvious quality improvement, the ability to skip back and ahead, smaller size, etc. So DVD was adopted. It was adopted very slowly. In fact some people still swear by VHS, but DVD has met it mass market potential. Blu-ray has one advantage in consumer eyes over DVD. Quality. This is not enough for the majority of people who have in the past ten years upgraded their entire library from VHS to DVD to upgrade again. Most think that DVD quality is good enough.
Personally, I am already seldom putting a disc into a device just to watch a movie. High Definition content can now be streamed into homes over the internet, and while the speed isn’t there for everyone yet, it will be by the time that Bluray has a chance to catch on with the mass market. At this point it is just a matter of pointing and clicking to watch whatever movie you want from a huge library. You don’t have to go to the store and get a disc. You don’t even have to wait for it to come to your house. Just point your remote at the TV and receive your movie when you are ready to watch it.
Systems like Netflix and the Apple Store are already pioneering this way of life. It’s too simple to think that Blu-ray will be able to compete once the streaming quality gets as good as Blu-ray is. Because of this, I say that Blu-ray could die and almost no one would cry.
